WHAT IS SWEAT Lab?

SWEAT Lab is a choreographic incubator for emerging choreographers. This one-week residency provides early career creators with choreographic mentorship, rehearsal space, professional dancers, technical & production support, a generous stipend and opportunities to present their work at state-of-the-art performance venue, Chelsea Factory. Through this residency, MOVE|NYC| provides the multi-faceted support choreographers need at the earliest stages of their careers in order to launch.

Excitedly, selected SWEAT Lab emerging choreographers and professional dancers are all MOVE|NYC| Young Professionals Program (YPP) Alumni. By nurturing emerging choreographers, MOVE|NYC|’s work extends beyond the creation of an industry pipeline. We strive to give emerging artists the opportunity to become leaders; by building their own repertory and creating bodies of work that will enable them to advance their careers and move the field forward.

Join us on Saturday, July 20th for the exciting culmination of these works-in-process at Chelsea Factory’s incredible theater
and a talkback with artists.

“This journey of my creative career has been extremely special and integral for me. I am so honored to be part of the 2024 SWEAT Lab choreographic incubator. I believe that building community through art and creation is so important. This open space to create and challenge myself within experimentation and craft is so beautiful and rare.

MOVE|NYC| was one of the first places where I experienced putting work together on a stage with my peers. MOVE opened the door for me to share the things that I was crafting in my after hours and acknowledged the work that I was doing, even when they weren’t looking! This last year has reminded me of something so important…“remember that time when someone gave you the space to flourish? Now make that space available for others too!”

With many thanks to the people who believed in me, I now do what I love, share what I love, and I try and open doors for others to do the same! I'm so excited for this opportunity to create work and explore back home with the family that once cultivated me to do just that!

Thank you, MOVE|NYC| SWEAT Lab!”

“I have been fortunate enough to go through the pipeline of MOVE|NYC| and the journey has made me confident in creating my own unique footprint in the dance community. To be given the opportunity to constantly share the different facets of my art form has been a true blessing. It was a full circle moment being the first MOVE alum to come back and choreograph a work for the Young Professionals Program. It was a special moment to give back all of the information that I've gained during my time in the program.

To be one of the SWEAT LAB choreographers this year is just another great feeling and affirmation that MOVE has and always will support me. While choreographic opportunities are scarce for emerging choreographers, MOVE has done what they do best...which is to provide support to their alumni and the dance community. I am very excited to be given the resources to produce a new work and can’t wait to share it with you all.”
